Jaden - The Champion of them all

I blogged about Jaden's cold on 14 Oct (you can read about it here), he didn't get better on Friday, instead, he was coughing so badly after his evening feed on Friday, me and hubby almost drove him to the hospital to seek treatment. But after making a call to my friend, she advised me to take a few steps to soothe Jaden from his discomfort, and they worked, so we didn't bring him to the hospital that night.

The next morning, I called my friend again and asked for her advice on which Doctor should I bring Jaden for his second treatment, because his cold doesn't seem to be getting better. She recommended the No. 1 paediatrician in Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC), by the name of Dr. Lee Eng Nam. But we thought, SJMC is quite far for us, and it was already 11am when I call my friend (the clinic closes at 12.30pm), so I decided to go to Prof. Lim at University Malaya Specialist Centre (UMSC) instead.

Prof. Lim diagnosed Jaden with Bronchiolitis, and prescribed 1 dose of atrovent for him using a nebulizer & a face mask. Wooooa... do I sound like a doctor? *chuckle* I asked Prof. Lim to write these terms for me so I could blog about it :-)

Atrovent is the name of the medicine commonly used to treat bronchiolitis, it relaxes the muscles around the airways so that they open up and the patient can breathe more easily, and Nebulizer is a device used to administer medication in the form of a mist inhaled into the lungs... (Ohhhhh... I learn something new :p).

ok enough about these boring stuff, let me tell you how Jaden did when he was treated with the nebulizer + face mask.

I was carrying him over my shoulder as the nurse put the face mask over his face. Then the nurse mixes the medication in the nebulizer and the medication starts to emit from inside the mask in the form of mist.

There are 2 holes at the sides of the mask, and we can see thick mist emitting from it when the process started. I can imagine the mist can be quite intimidating when it escapes from the mask and cloud your vision, but my little hero DID NOT STRUGGLE AT ALL.

I can see from my angle, my little hero holding on to the face mask with his right hand. He is holding it so tightly, all his finger tips turned white, lol.

You can see the mist inside the mask. It is not very clear in this picture, but the mist is actually quite thick in the initial stage, and my little hero did not cry, did not struggle or try to push the face mask away.

Look at his frowned eyebrows, he is obviously very disturbed by this thing over his face, but still managed to sit quietly like a champion.

"It's ok papa, I can hold on to the face mask myself... my fingers may be tiny, but I have a super strong grip"

"ok I am a bit bored now, may be I can use my left hand to remove this thing... hmmm"

"Are we done yet?"

After about 5 minutes, the process is almost over and my little hero attempts to remove the face mask on his own.

During the whole process, my little hero was resting quietly on my shoulder, holding tightly to the face mask (assisted by my hubby of course). The nurse, a middle aged chinese lady, was SOOO impressed by my boy, she asked the other nurses to come check him out.

Nurse to her friends: "you come and see you come and see, this child is soooo good, never struggle, somemore can hold on to the mask"

And she told us, usually all the infants will cry and fight with the nurse when they administer the medicine using the nebulizer, and she has never seen a baby as good as this all her years working in UMSC.

I tell you, I was sooooooooooooooooooooo proud of my little boy!! And soooooooooooooooo grateful to God for giving me such a wonderful & obedient champion. Truly he was the champion of all the babies in UMSC!!!! (ok calm down HM, we get the idea...) :p

After the treatment, we waited for about 10 minutes before we see Prof. Lim again. He wants to check if atrovent is effective for Jaden, if it is, he will not hear the wheezes (high-pitched whistling noises when exhaling) anymore.

When we went into Prof. Lim's room, he said, "I heard he did well..."

*mummy & papa grin from ear to ear* Yes he did!! and this story will go to the whole clan!!

My champion fast asleep after the nebulizer treatment, being checked by Prof. Lim.

Prof. Lim says the medicine worked well for Jaden, he no longer hears the wheezes when he check on him again.

And we left UMSC feeling Oh So Proud of our little champion :-)

Get well soon my precious darling, mummy loves you... *MUUAAKKSS!*
